Akumal Beach Villas

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is the best way to see the teeming underwater life in the Riviera Maya with the least amount of equipment. All you need are a pair of fins, snorkel and visor. Admire sea stars, vividly colored fish and mossy rock formations as you move through the coral reefs – just steps from your villa's beach. If you'd rather explore in a more protected environment, the calm, well-maintained Yal Ku Lagoon is a good bet (especially for children) and is very close to the villas.

Diving

With three dive shops located within walking distance of your villa in Akumal, you'll have all the equipment and support you need to explore the undresea world of the Caribbean's Great Maya Reef. Take in different species of corals, brightly-hued tropical fish, and other marine fauna and flora.

Cave Diving

For a unique experience, try cenote or cave diving – you'll explore the subterranean rivers formed by the gradual filtering of rainwater through the limestone over many, many years. Some of the best cave diving is found in Dos Ochos, located just five miles south of Jade Beach and a mere 10-minute drive from your villa.

Swimming with Dolphins

Splash around with these beautiful marine mammals in Xel-Ha park, 10 minutes south of your villa, or in Puerto Aventura. Choose a one-hour encounter or stay as long as three hours and interact with sting rays and manatees as well.

Parks

Blessed by nature, the Riviera Maya's parks feature lush jungle environs, underground rivers leading to the sea and unique plants and wildlife. Here are a few to whet your appetite.

Xcaret

Truly an experience for all five senses, Xcaret combines tradition, adventure and natural wonders in one of the world's most unique eco-archaeological parks. The butterfly aviary is a highlight. Don't miss the evening show, similar to a Mexican-style Broadway production.

Xel-Ha

Enjoy the world's most spectacular natural aquarium. Swim with dolphins and embark on an aquatic adventure as you explore creeks, lagoons, natural wells and ancient caves fed by subterranean rivers that flow to the Caribbean Sea.

Beaches

With miles of powder sand and calming turquoise waters, you really can't go wrong when it comes to beaches in this area, but we do have some favorites.

Follow the signs to Boca Paila. Stop at Zamas for a drink, and have our favorite lunch of fresh fish at the restaurant at Posada Margherita, where the sandy beach is endless.

Drive about 10 km north from Akumal. You will see a sign to the restaurant "El Cielo" (great place for a bite to eat). Make a right on that dirt road and go to the end for Xpu-Ha.

Just 10 minutes south of Villa Zen del Mar is Xca Cel beach – perhaps the best one we've ever been to!
